TönöSauna is a wood burning sauna built from a salvaged 1966 Avion travel trailer located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is an alternative social and civic space, a mobile platform for public talks, art and presentations in which people can rest and warm themselves during the harsh winter months of the Upper Midwest. The former/stringer monocoque construction of the trailer is the inspiration for the custom built interior, which contains curvilinear CAD/CAM fabricated benches. TönöSauna is an ergonomic landscape meant to accommodate a wide variety of body positions and types.
TönöSauna was built as an important and restorative social space for the Upper Midwest. Because the sauna is mobile, it has the ability to travel to Twin Cities’ neighborhoods that are unfamiliar or underserved by this much needed social space. The project encourages people to come out of their homes and join others at public talks, sound installations, and classes held in TönöSauna.
